MUNDEN COLT PREMIER ACTION
by JEFF AULT

Order Six-Gun Magic OPTION #2 for your Colt SAA and Jeff will tear it down, then customize and re-build it into a smooth and crisp Munden Premier Action — the ultimate six-gun for any use, especially Fast Draw using the fanning method.

Munden Premier Action – OPTION #2 on a COLT SAA includes:

  • A refined, buttery smooth, light action
  • A crisp trigger pull
  • Honing the forcing cone
  • Munden coil hand spring conversion
  • Re-machining cylinder locks and lead-ins
  • Highly specialized altering of the locking bolt to protect the cylinder locks
  • Making and installing a Munden Bolt Stabilizer Block, another early, Bob Munden innovation: Jeff Ault custom makes and fits to each gun every Bolt Stabilizer Block, which protects the frame from eventual major damage from fanning the gun. Every Bolt Stabilizer Block must be fitted to each gun. The industry now makes similar bolt stabilizer blocks and sells them as a drop-in part. As Bob Munden would say, ‘That ain’t gonna work.”
  • Sighting in at the range with the use of the barrel vice of Bob Munden’s design. Sighting in a fixed-sight gun correctly requires a lot of experience, time, and the use of a special device called a barrel vice, which Jeff uses at the range. Jeff does triggers the same way Bob did — not ultra light, just crisp. Talk to Jeff about your needs — 406-494-2833 (Mountain Time) Honing the forcing cone dramatically reduces lead build up and improves accuracy. This service is included with OPTION #2. The steel Munden Stabilizer Block is an essential addition to the single-action revolver for anyone participating in today’s Fast-Draw sports. When Bob Munden entered the game of Fast Draw as a teen during the 1950s , he could not afford to replace a gun he essentially beat up by fanning it super hard and fast, during day after day of practice, shooting thousands of rounds every week.Committed to preventing breakdowns, he determined exactly how parts in the gun wore out or broke, then figured out what he had to do to protect a gun from the extreme stresses he put it through. Bob taught himself how to ease the tension on the mainspring without weakening it, and how to protect the cylinder locks by altering the locking bolt to protect the cylinder locks. He also came up with the concept of making and fitting a steel block to prevent wear on the frame where the locking bolt emerges from the frame to engage the cylinder locks. He realized a steel block would completely stabilize the bolt in order to prevent wear on the frame and preserve the bolt. A Munden Steel Block is not a drop-in piece — it must be fitted to each revolver.

BACKGROUND:

Bob Munden realized early on that the Colt single-action revolver was not designed for Fast Draw, a sport Hollywood inspired. Through the processes of experimentation and elimination Bob figured out how to improve the single action revolvers so they could withstand the abuses of shooting Fast Draw the way he wanted to shoot it: Bob Munden FAST.

Throughout his competition years, Bob continued to improve the original design of the five moving parts of the beloved single action — and developed several key innovations including Bob’s unique modifications of the cylinder notches and locking bolt.

Note: A stock single-action revolver (a gun straight from the factory) is just not ready for hard use and can be damaged quite easily. Remember,  if a shooter tries to use the fanning method to shoot Fast Draw with a stock gun, or a gun that has had only a basic action & trigger job, he/she will tear up the locks on all six chambers, sheer off the cylinder locking bolt and eventually collapse the frame.

Six-Gun Magic OPTION #1 is appropriate for most types of shooting, but available only for the Colt SAA, a Munden Premier Action by Jeff Ault, or OPTION #2, is highly specialized to withstand the punishment of all kinds of shooting, including Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS,) Cowboy Mounted Shooting, Cowboy Fast Draw (CFD) – and especially Open-Class Fast Draw. Bob Munden stressed his guns like no one else. He customized the guns he used in competitions and demonstrations so they could withstand the stresses of Fast-Draw with the thumbing or fanning methods. In the 1960s, Bob came up with the innovations that made it possible for him to be able to draw and fire a single-action revolver as fast as he could move without risk of breaking down the gun. Bob came to call the result of his major improvements a Race Gun, or his OPTION #2.

“These are not gimmick guns. Bob figured out how to re-engineer and re-build them to withstand the extreme stresses of Fast Draw, and I learned from him in person.” — Jeff Ault
